What is a watershed?

A watershed is the area of land where rain and snow collect and then drain to a common water body (like a stream, river, wetland) and/or sink into the earth to become ground water. Watersheds come in all shapes and sizes. They cross county, state, and national boundaries. No matter where you are, you're in a watershed!

Every drop of water that flows from the faucet is a product of our watershed. Everyday activities such as driving a car, fertilizing your lawn, or turning on the clothes washer can have an impact. By learning how our watershed works, we can make changes that will enhance the quality of every living thing in our watershed.

In Boise, we live in the Lower Boise watershed. It covers the counties of Ada, Boise, Canyon, Elmore, Gem, and Payette.
