Equal Access to All City-Sponsored Services
The City of Boise embraces the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990 and Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973, and is committed to making every reasonable effort to provide equal access to all City-sponsored services, programs, and activities for citizens and employees with disabilities. Section 504 provides that no otherwise qualified individual with a disability shall, solely by reason of his or her disability, be excluded from the participation in, be denied the benefits of, or be subjected to discrimination under any program or activity receiving Federal financial assistance.
Under this law, individuals with disabilities are defined as persons with a physical or mental impairment which substantially limits one or more major life activities. People who have a history of, or who are regarded as having a physical or mental impairment that substantially limits one or more major life activities, are also covered. Major life activities include caring for one's self, walking, seeing, hearing, speaking, breathing, working, performing manual tasks, and learning. Some examples of impairments which may substantially limit major life activities, even with the help of medication or aids/devices, are: AIDS, alcoholism, blindness or visual impairment, cancer, deafness or hearing impairment, diabetes, drug addiction, heart disease, and mental illness.
The City of Boise will make reasonable accommodations in policies, practices, and procedures to ensure equal access and will operate its programs so that, when viewed as a whole, those programs are reasonably accessible to, and usable by, individuals with disabilities. The ADA does not require the City of Boise to take any action that would fundamentally alter the nature of its programs or services, or impose an undue financial or administrative burden. Complaints or grievances that claim discrimination, or that a City program, service, or activity is not accessible to persons with disabilities should be directed to Greg Morris, at the address listed below.
How Do I File a Grievance?
Any individual who believes he or she has been discriminated against on the basis of disability by a recipient of Federal financial assistance, his or her representative, or a member of a class of persons so situated, or the authorized representative of a member of that class should contact the ADA/Section 504 Coordinator.
