Mobile Recreation Unit
MOBILE RECREATION UNIT
WHAT IS IT
Mobile Recreation vans are cargo vans outfitted with balls, jump ropes, bases and other supplies for fitness, nutrition, art, drama and dance activities for kids. Check out the video on YouTube.
SCHEDULE
During the summer months, the Mobile Recreation Vans visit parks, schools and apartment complexes throughout the City of Boise. During the school year, the vans visit schools through the end of the academic year.
FUNDING
The vans are funded by the City of Boise and operated by Boise Parks & Recreation staff. Additional support is provided by the University of Idaho’s Expanded Food and Nutrition Education Program, the Boise Sunrise Rotary Club and the Boise Southwest Rotary Club. The Boise Weekly awarded a one- time grant in 2008 to support an artist-in-residence program. A free daily snack is provided for each child.
BACKGROUND
The Mobile Recreation Unit was launched in February 2008 to address programming deficiencies identified by the Mayor’s Council on Children and Youth. Accessibility, both in terms of location and cost, was identified as a major obstacle facing families looking for safe, quality after-school programming for their children. The Mobile Recreation Unit is intended to help alleviate the accessibility issue and provide safe, supervised activities near to home. This Institution is an Equal Opportunity Provider.
