Our community center is located at Whitney Elementary School, 1609 S. Owyhee St., on the Boise Bench off Overland Road. The center, which is operated by Boise Parks & Recreation in partnership with the Boise School District, opened in August 2009.
The 4,000-square-foot community center features multipurpose rooms for after-school drop-in use, studio space for art and dance classes for children and adults, and a supervised teen activity center with computers, games, and a lounging area.
For a list of Boise Parks & Recreation fee-based classes offered in winter/spring 2011-2012, see the Whitney program flyer.
The city of Boise allocated $600,000 for the center, which will serve low-income children in the neighborhood. Whitney is a Title I school with more than 50 percent of children
receiving free or reduced price lunches.
In 2008, the City of Boise and the Boise School District opened two new community centers at Grace Jordan and Morley Nelson elementary schools. Both schools also meet Title I guidelines. Funding for the two centers was provided by a $94 million bond approved by voters.
At Whitney Community Center, the Kid City free drop-in program will be available for children in grades 4-6. Staff members will provide instruction in fitness and art, homework assistance, and a snack. Kid City will be open year round.
Teens will enjoy an informal gathering space with cozy lounge chairs, computer stations with interactive video games, and a large-screen TV and Wii games. Staff members will provide mentoring and life skills development for teens.
The center, which is open year round -- including holidays and summer break -- is located in a wing of the school adjacent to the cafeteria and gymnasium.
