A new community center on the Boise Bench is located at Morley Nelson Elementary School, 7701 W Northview St.
The school and community center were built on the grounds of Fairmont Junior High School. The new school replaces two aging elementary schools - Cole and Jackson.
The 4,000-square-foot community center features multipurpose rooms for free after-school drop-in use, an art center with classes for children and adults, and a supervised teen activity center with computers, games, and a lounging area.
The center features an art & dance studio, for fee-based instruction for children and adults. This spring’s fee-based classes include batik, glass mosiacs, parent-toddler dance, drama, salsa dance, and a variety of and other visual and performing arts activities. Registration will be accepted by phone (384-4486), in person at Fort Boise Community Center, or online.
Kid City, a free after-school drop-in program open form 3:00-7:00pm for children in grades 4-6, will include fitness and art programs, homework assistance, and a snack provided by the Boise School District. Kid City will be open year round.
Teens will enjoy an informal gathering space with cozy lounge chairs, computer stations with interactive video games, and a flat-screen TV with Nintendo Wii. Staff members will provide mentoring and life skills development for teens. The teen center hours are weekdays from 2:30-7:00pm.
The centers are located in a wing adjacent to the school cafeterias and gymnasiums. Community center hours are 9 a.m.-9 p.m.
