The Natatorium Hydro Tube
The Natatorium swimming pool located at 1811 Warm Springs Avenue has been serving the community since 1892. First designed and built by John Paulsen in 1892, the original Nat had 80' trusses and a 125' geothermal heated pool. An amusement park with a rollercoaster named White City, stretched behind the building where the hydro tube is now sited. In 1932 a windstorm damaged the structure beyond repair and led to its demolition.
The facility now has a 60' x 120' swimming pool with two one meter diving boards. The depth ranges from 3' to 12'. A 24' x 24' wading pool and an enclosed water slide called the Hydro tube are attractive additions. The modern Natatorium swimming facility and hydro tube have replaced the former amusement park and pool.
The Hydro Tube is 350' long with a 55" diameter opening and drops a total of 43' in elevation in a serpentine pattern. In the past revenues from the hydro tube and pool have offset costs of operation, but repair and maintenance are now requiring immediate attention to restore this popular park amenity.
Over the years, the gasket material has declined in the seams and the fiberglass hairs have become exposed on the exterior surface. Extensive repair and refurbishing are needed. Continual dripping has caused wet spots creating muddy play areas for children and generally unsafe conditions. Mosquito populations are thriving in these shallow wet spots. It is estimated that thousands of gallons of water are lost during the season.
Currently Boise Parks & Recreation is evaluating several methods of repair. One solution requires patching seams, but this method will not solve exterior problems. Another method would disassemble, repair, install new gaskets and reassemble. This would repair all damage from stress cracking and rock damage. It is the more expensive and longer term solution.
The Boise Parks & Recreation Department recognizes the recreational value this facility brings to the community and will strive to continue this valuable service to the people of Boise.
