Brian Jorgenson named new Boise city forester
Brian Jorgenson, a 13-year employee of the Community Forestry Unit, has been named City Forester/Park Division Manager for the City of Boise.
Jorgenson joined Community Forestry as a forestry specialist in 1994. Born and raised in southeastern Minnesota, he graduated from the University of Minnesota in 1994 with a bachelor’s degree in urban forestry. Jorgenson is a certified arborist with the International Society of Arboriculture.
The Community Forestry Unit is a division of Boise Parks & Recreation and is responsible for the care of more than 41,000 public trees in parks and rights of way. Boise’s community forest consists of a diverse array of coniferous and deciduous trees from more than 75 species.
A 10-year management plan guides expenditures and care of the city’s urban forest. The plan, which was developed by a volunteer committee working in conjunction with Community Forestry staff, must be approved by the Boise City Council and Board of Park & Recreation Commission.
Community Forestry outreach activities include an Arbor Day celebration, a volunteer Tree Steward program, projects with high school TREE clubs, habitat camps, storytime sessions for children at local libraries, and other activities.
For the 29th year, the City of Boise has been named a Tree City USA by the National Arbor Day Foundation in cooperation with the U.S. Forest Service and the National Association of State Foresters. The award recognizes Boise’s commitment to a comprehensive community forestry program.
