Dog Off-Leash Areas
Dogs and their owners will enjoy playing at 4 off-leash parks maintained by Boise Parks & Recreation. At the parks, dogs can romp during daylight hours. The parks feature mulch or sand surface materials; no green grass. Owners must pick up after their pets. In 2001, staff created a Dog Off-Leash Area Task Force which met regularly to discuss the merits of establishing dog off-leash areas (DOLAs) within the City of Boise. The task force determined that DOLAs should be established in each quadrant of the city. The current off-leash areas are located in Morris Hill Park, Military Reserve Flood Basin Dog Off-Leash Area, Pine Grove Park, Sterling Park and trails in Military Reserve and Hull's Gulch Reserve. There are other proposed off-leash areas. Be aware that there are specific rules and regulations in dog parks.
Restricted Dog Areas
Dogs are restricted from various facilities year round and seasonally due to use agreements, conservation efforts and specific park uses. See a complete listing of restricted areas.
Trails
In the Boise Foothills, dogs can run off leash if they are not disturbing wildlife or causing a safety concern with other trail users. In these "Controlled Off-Leash" areas, dog owners still must carry a leash and waste bag with them, and their dogs should not be further than 30 feet away at any time. For more information, see www.ridgetorivers.org. There are specific rules and regulations pertaining to dogs in the foothills.
Department Poster Dog
In an effort to educate citizens about responsible dog ownership and controlled off-leash trails, Boise Parks and Recreation along with City DOG sponsored a Poster Dog Contest. Over 70 entries were received by Boise Parks and Recreation. The winner of the contest, Jeb, a blue tick hound proudly resides with Paula McCollum of Boise. Jeb is a well rounded dog; when he's not walking the Hull's Gulch off-leash trails, he is spending his time as a search and rescue dog or as a reserve deputy. Learn more about Jeb's find!
