Free service offers curbside collection of old appliances and furniture
April 09, 2008
Public Works encourages residents to use this free service to keep old appliances out of the landfill.
Has your refrigerator or water heater finally given up? Here is your chance to recycle these bulky wastes just by placing them on the curb the night before your scheduled trash/recycling collection day.
As part of the city's trash and recycling collection program, Allied Waste will recycle old appliances free of charge for residential customers. Washers, dryers, water heaters, and refrigerators are accepted. Freon is drained from the refrigerators, recharged, then reused. Televisions, anti-freeze, and pesticides are not accepted curbside, but can be taken to any household hazardous waste collection site for proper disposal.
It is important that you call Allied Services at 345-1265 to schedule a pickup. Set the item out on the curb the night before your scheduled collection day and mark the item with "Allied Waste" or "AW". If you fail to call and schedule a pickup or don't mark the item, then Allied Waste won't know that they need to pick up the item.
Businesses can also take advantage of this service for a nominal fee. The fee for non-freon appliances/wastes is $21.46 per item. The fee for freon-containing appliances is $43.20 per unit. A small price to pay for convenience and peace of mind.
Allied Waste will also collect couches, recliners, or other bulky furniture curbside for free. These items will be taken directly to the landfill. If these items are still usable, contact the Idaho Youth Ranch (or other thrift store) to schedule a pickup. Donating or reusing materials whenever possible is an important step in environmental protection and extending the life of the landfill.
