Castle Hills Park Playground Replacement

Castle Hills Park Playground Concept

Playground Details

The playground designed by LuckyDog Recreation will be a playfully themed design with tree and butterfly elements. Artificial berms would be constructed as part of a climbing structure, and there would be ramps connecting various access points, along with a rope play course.

Inclusive play features include sensory play on accessible ramps, inclusive group swings, a wheelchair accessible slide, attractions for kids ages 2-5 and ages 5-12, sensory play panels, and play areas at an accessible height.

The new playground will have artificial turf surfacing, creating a durable and accessible experience. The design is ADA accessible from the parking lot and include inclusive play features with various swinging, sliding, spinning and interactive elements for imagination play. The concept also adds a shelter near the restroom.

Following extensive damage from a large playground fire in February, Boise Parks and Recreation removed the main playground structure at Castle Hills Park. Plans are moving forward to replace and improve the damaged playground and enhance the entire playground design.

We asked for community input to select a new playground design that is engaging, inclusive, and provides an accessible experience for everyone who visits Castle Hills Park. Option #1 (designed by LuckyDog Recreation) was the preferred design, winning 54.6% of the vote. Thank you to the 1,500+ community members who participated via survey and provided input on their preferred design option.

Next Steps

The Boise Parks and Recreation design team will oversee the final details and work through the construction document process with the manufacturer. This project is funded through insurance coverage, along with some supplemental city funding to incorporate additional accessibility features at the park.

Playground construction is expected to take place later this year (2024).
