Mayor's Office

Department Description

The Mayor's Office provides the primary staff and resource support for the Mayor in his roles as the City's chief executive officer, head of the Executive Management Team, and chair of the City Council. The Mayor's Office oversees day-to-day operations of all City departments, is responsible for policy and budget development, sets the City Council agenda, and coordinates constituent service and communications functions throughout the organization.

Mission Statement
The mission of the Mayor's Office is to lead in the strategic direction of the organization and the community with the goal of providing exceptional municipal services and promoting a healthy, safe environment while ensuring a strong economy.

Strengths

  • We are resolute in our dedication to the people of Boise and the future generations that will benefit from the decisions we make today.
  • We focus intensely and consistently on our responsibilities as public servants and the municipal issues that demand attention, including public safety, neighborhood livability, economic development, transportation, air and water quality, and preservation of open space.
  • Our people bring years of wide-ranging experience in public policy, business knowledge and citizen involvement to the task of delivering outstanding local services.

Weaknesses

  • We continue to battle the tendency of all large organizations to become inflexible and inefficient.
  • We are challenged by our community’s unique governance structure, which for decades has resulted in isolated decision-making and a lack of consistency in public policy.
  • We have created one of the most transparent and accessible government organizations anywhere, but our citizens demand and deserve even better communication.

Opportunities

  • Through continued implementation of the Strategic Plan and department business plans, we can address a multitude of weaknesses and deliver true efficiencies and effectiveness to our citizens.
  • By building long-term structural balance into the City’s budget, we have provided a platform for expanding city services using existing resources whenever possible.
  • We have established a standard of actively involving key stakeholders and the public in decision-making, which will help build consistency and commitment in our policies as we move forward.

Threats

  • We face the enormous challenge of making hard decisions early so that Boise does not follow the self-destructive path of so many other growing cities.
  • We sometimes lack the statutory authority and budgetary flexibility to fully address our citizens’ highest priorities, including growth, transportation, and air quality.
  • As the most isolated city of our size in the nation, we may lack the economic diversity to easily weather a serious downturn.
