Additional Information

Animal Licensing supports the cost of animal control within the City of Boise. A benefit of having your dog licensed is if the dog is lost and someone finds it, they can call the City Clerk's office or look the tag number up online by the dog's tag number and we can provide the owner's contact information so the dog can be returned. The City Clerk's office returns hundreds of dogs a year to their owners using this service. A discount is given for any animal that is spayed or neutered, see fees below.

Boise City Code 6-7-17.A.3 states: "It shall be unlawful for any person to own, harbor, keep or possess a dog over the age of sixteen (16) weeks within the City without first procuring a license..." The penalty for failure to license a dog is stated in Boise City Code 6-7-37, which is: "...is guilty of a misdemeanor which is punishable by a fine not to exceed three hundred dollars ($300.00) or by imprisonment in the County jail for a term not to exceed six (6) months, or by both such fine and imprisonment."
