1st Annual Trail Awareness Run a Big Success

Seventy-five runners participated May 17, 2008 in the first annual Trail Awareness Run aimed at improving knowledge of trail etiquette on the Ridge to Rivers trail system.

The 8-mile course started at Camels Back Park and covered parts of four trails in the Foothills. The event was coordinated by Ridge to Rivers staff and members of the Trail Ranger program, 10 volunteers who patrol the Foothills on foot or bike. Their goal is to educate trail users about Foothills policies and resource issues as well as provide general trail information.

Click here for the results of this year’s race. Thanks to all of the participants and our dedicated volunteers!

Volunteers Close Unauthorized Trails

Local mountain bikers have recently put in considerable effort toward helping to direct traffic off of unauthorized trails and trail braids on the Ridge to Rivers system. Members of Disciples of Dirt closed an unauthorized trail in the Big Springs area, and SWIMBA members closed a widened section of the Lower Hulls Gulch Trail to direct users into the original, slower and more technical alignment. Thanks to both groups!

Polecat Trails Completed!
7 miles of new trails are now open in the Polecat Reserve. The trails were constructed by Ridge to Rivers crews this summer, with funding from a Recreational Trails Program grant, the Southwest Idaho Mountain Bike Association and the City of Boise. The trails are non-motorized, and include the 5.8-mile Polecat Loop, .5-mile Quick Draw Trail and .87-mile Doe Ridge Trail.
(6 MB) The trail system can be accessed via a trailhead on Cartwright Road, .25 miles east of the Pierce Park/Cartwright Road junction. Construction of the trailhead will be completed by early October. A southern access to this system will be constructed in future. This access will be from the end of Collister Road. As these trails are very new, expect soft travel for awhile.

Polecat Trail System:
**UPDATE** The inventory of Aase's onion populations in the Polecat Reserve area has been completed, and can be reviewed here. The Foothills Advisory Committee is reviewing the report, and will recommend how to manage dogs in Polecat Reserve at its September 3rd meeting. Until that time, it is recommended that you keep your dogs on-leash if you choose to bring them on the Polecat trails. Final policy will be posted on this website, as well through the local media. 8/15/08

New Trail Opportunities in the Shafer Creek Area
Volunteers and Ridge to Rivers crews constructed three reroutes this summer to pull trails off of private land in the Sinker Creek area. Our sincere thanks goes out to all who invested so much of their own time and effort in this project! The Shafer Trail System is now signed, and maps are available at most Boise outdoor stores. It should be noted that numerous trails still exist in the lower Shafer Creek area, that are not signed or depicted on the map. These trails cross private land, and should be avoided. Please stay only on system trails.

In addition, the Deer Point Trail and The Face Trail have now been completed at the Bogus Basin Ski Area. Many thanks to the SWIMBA and REI volunteers who helped with the Deer Point Trail construction! These trails provide outstanding views of the ski area and the Treasure Valley below, as well as an excellent singletrack trail route to upper Shafer Butte. The Face Trail in particular, with rock outcrops and high exposure, provides an experience not typically found on the Ridge to Rivers trail system. 11/07/07

Hidden Springs Trail Closures
The trails north of Hidden Springs will be seeing major changes as 8th Addition development occurs beginning March 12, 2007. Access to Currant Creek and Upper Red Tail Trail #71 will be via Lookout Loop #72, and a new relocation that Hidden Springs has opened on lower Currant Creek. Upper Red Tail can also be accessed from Currant Creek Trail #75, off of Cartwright Road. Lower Red Tail Trail will soon have a new connection over to Cartwright Road via a re-alignment of the Bitterbrush Trail #73, that was closed last year. For more information regarding Hidden Springs development, visit their website at www.hiddensprings.com

Dog Waste is No. 1 issue on Foothills Trails
An increase in dog waste is growing into a major problem in the Foothills.  More poop than ever is piling up at trailheads and along pathways, says David Gordon, River to Rivers Coordinator. "Without question, the No. 1 negative comment that we receive is the amount of dog waste encountered on trails, followed closely by dogs off leash in on-leash areas," he says. Dog owners frequently disregard on-leash trail restrictions in Hulls Gulch and Military Reserve.
