Trail System Map - Camelsback/Hulls Gulch Reserve
Camelsback
/Hulls Gulch Reserve

These two City Reserves are popular and busy. Hulls Gulch Reserve was spared from development in the early 1990's with the help of concerned citizens and local and federal funding. With Hulls Creek as the back bone, wildlife find the area to their liking as well. To assure opportunities to view wildlife, please stay only on the main trails. The ponds at the end of 9th St. were designed for flood control but also are a magnet for birds and other wildlife. The large pond is fenced to give the wildlife an area that is undisturbed by people and pets. Camels Back is undergoing a "face lift" with restoration efforts. Nearly 3 miles of trail are available on the hill while an effort is underway to close and rehabilitate the steep hill climbs that have been eroding. The two rare plants found in the Reserve are also being protected by these efforts. Please give this area your help by staying only on the trails marked with

Camels Back Trails
This hill is loved by many. The views from the top are stellar. The use of steep trails, however, has killed the grasses whose roots are the glue that holds the hill together. Restoration efforts include getting use off steep trails and reestablishing grasses to keep the hill from eroding further. This will succeed only with your help. Use only the marked trails.

Red Fox Trail #36 / Hulls Grove #35 / Owls Roost Trail #37
Families can enjoy a variety of routes and loops using these trails. Various kinds of birds, fox and deer are spotted on occasion. The Grove is an area of native and exotic trees providing a nice shade alternate to the hot sagebrush environment of the Foothills. The Ponds Loop is a perfect short walk for small children and the bird watching is good. Some of these trails may be designated Pedestrian Only in the future. Please respect posted signs. Start at Camels Back parking area or the end of 9th Street.

Kestrel Trail #39A
This is a great way to connect to the Central Foothills trails and is a good alternative to coming down Lower Hulls Gulch. The short but steep route could be tough for some folks.

Trailhead Parking:

  • This area can be reached from the east end of Camelsback Park located on the corner of 13th and Heron Streets, from a small parking area at the end of 9th Street, or on 8th Street at the Grove Trailhead (.5 miles from 8th Street/Lemp intersection) and the Lower Hulls Gulch Trailhead (1.1 miles from 8th Street/Lemp intersection).
