Meet the CandidatesCandidate Terms and Unopposed Races
In 2020, the Idaho Legislature passed a bill requiring cities with populations over 100,000 people to create districts for city council elections. They also directed cities to declare any unopposed candidate elected, meaning candidates without opposition will not appear on the ballot. This year, all six council districts are up for election – four districts have competitive races and two are unopposed. Residents can only vote for the City Council seat in their district.
Odd-numbered districts will run for four-year terms and even-numbered districts will run for two-year terms so that council elections are staggered.
