Lithium-Ion Battery Safety

Lithium-ion batteries power many devices we use daily, from smartphones and laptops to e-bikes and power tools. While efficient and reliable, they can pose a serious fire risk if improperly handled. Understanding how to use, store, and dispose of these batteries safely can help prevent fires and keep you and your loved ones safe.

Why Lithium-Ion Batteries Can Be Dangerous

  • Lithium-ion batteries store a large amount of energy in a small space.
  • Damage, overheating, or manufacturing defects can cause batteries to overheat, catch fire, or explode.
  • Fires caused by lithium-ion batteries burn quickly and are difficult to extinguish.

Safety Tips

We are proud to support the Fire Safety Research Institute’s (FSRI) “Take C.H.A.R.G.E. of Battery Safety” campaign, which provides guidance on handling lithium-ion batteries safely.

Buy Safely

  • Buy only listed products.
  • Look for a safety certification mark such as UL, ETL or CSA. This means it meets important safety standards.
  • Use batteries that are designed for your specific device.

Charge Safely

  • Always use the charger that came with your device—or one approved by the manufacturer.
  • Charge batteries on a hard, flat surface away from anything that can burn.
  • Never charge while you’re sleeping or when you’re not home.
  • Stop using or charging a battery if it’s damaged, bulging, leaking, or hot to the touch.
