Council Passes New Childcare Ordinance

The City of Boise is making progress on helping families find safe and affordable childcare.

Last week Mayor Lauren McLean was able to meet with Acuarela Spanish Preschool owner Belen Guillen to talk about challenges our city's childcare providers and families are facing. Belen, originally from Argentina, has a passion for providing service to children and families here in Boise.

Earlier this year, the Mayor convened the Childcare Task Force to look at these same issues. They identified three focus areas: licensing, accessibility, and affordability. Tuesday, City Council passed a new childcare ordinance to help address these barriers.

The ordinance provides for temporary licensing while the city is doing background checks, covers the cost of those background checks, protects children as those employees would work under supervision, and waives licensing fees.
