Boise River Community Habitat Enhancement

The Boise River and its banks are an important part of Boise’s legacy. Supporting urban riparian and pollinator habitat in Boise is a team effort. Clean water is vital to the health and vibrancy of our city’s future. Staff across departments at the City of Boise work closely with community partners and stakeholders to protect and support these important areas.
The City of Boise manages 29 miles of the Boise River Greenbelt and associated riverside habitat, or riparian area, as well as 10 native pollinator gardens located throughout the city. Starting in the 1860s, the Boise River and surrounding area faced dramatic changes. Read more about the history of the Lower Boise River via story map.
Dams and development have made the Treasure Valley more livable while altering the natural landscape and ecosystem health. Rehabilitating and maintaining riparian and native pollinator habitat has been an ongoing community effort to enhance these plant and animal communities. As Boise grows, these important habitat spaces that keep our river clean, provide recreation opportunities, lower our climate impact, and keep our local wildlife healthy are increasingly threatened. That’s why the City of Boise and its partners are working hard to protect this important resource.
What We Do
The City of Boise works with the community to actively manage urban pollinator and riparian habitat spaces along the Boise River through adoption programs, service projects, and other initiatives in collaboration with countless amazing volunteers and external partners. Our management benefits greatly from generous community support and local stewards. The city’s primary focus areas to enhance urban riparian and pollinator habitat are inspired by similar open space restoration efforts and include:
- Prioritize the enhancement of existing habitat core
- Promote local biodiversity through education and stewardship
- Connect community members with our urban habitat and one another

Program Goals
Our volunteer-powered adaptive management strategy addresses the public’s conservation goals, as determined over many years of resident engagement, and approved by city management plans (including the Boise River Resource Management and Master Plan, USACE 2015 Land Survey, 1999 Boise River). Conservation goals include protecting and conserving clean water for drinking, safeguarding a critical urban habitat corridor, preserving native plant species, and enhancing river access and recreational opportunities.
