Long before Idaho received its statehood in 1890, pioneers began the task of planting trees throughout Boise to improve community appearance and provide cool shade in an otherwise harsh desert frontier. Today, thousands of trees grace our city thanks to their efforts and the more recent commitment of Boise's citizens and Boise Community Forestry. Together, our awareness of and love for the trees and their many benefits has helped Boise live up to its reputation as "The City of Trees".
The Treasure Valley Tree Selection Guide, developed by over twenty public, private and non-profit industry partners and facilitated by Mary Jane Marlow with Canopi Design, provides a comprehensive guide of recommended tree species for planting in various landscape settings throughout the Treasure Valley.
The Treasure Valley recognizes the value of our community trees, a cumulative benefit of over $9 million each year in the form of clean air, clean water, reduced energy use, enhanced property values and extensive human health benefits! In order for us to recognize these benefits, it is important that we plan for and plant the right trees and cultivate them to maturity.
WHO CAN USE THE GUIDE
The guide can be used by homeowners, municipal staff, planners, builders, landscape designers and installers and the nursery industry. We encourage everyone planting trees in the Treasure Valley to use this guide to select and plant the right tree in the right place so that it will thrive in your landscape setting for years to come. Most of these trees are generally available at local nurseries.
You can also purchase a full color, printed and bound copy at Boise Parks and Recreation Department’s main office (1104 Royal Boulevard, at the northeast entrance to Ann Morrison Park) or at the Department’s Community Forestry office at 4969 Dorman Street. The cost for the printed guide is $10.
