Lifeguard Training

Lifeguard Training - Ages 15 and Older

*Participants must be 15 by the last day of class, no exceptions.

The American Red Cross course will be held for swimmers ages 15 and older at Borah Pool or Ivywild Pool. In order to register for this course, you must be proficient in your swimming skills. A preregistration skills test will be administered to every individual that would like to participate in this course. 

The skills test will consist of:

  • Retrieving a ten-pound brick from deep water
  • Treading water for two minutes
  • 300 yard swim using both the front crawl and breaststroke.

Registration will open after the participants complete the prerequisite.

Registration is REQUIRED two (2) weeks before the class starts in order to complete enrollment in the online portion of the course and begin the online learning before the first class session.

Part of the fee will be paid to Fort Boise for registration, and part of the fee will be paid directly to Red Cross during the online registration process.

Junior Lifeguard - Ages 11-14

The American Red Cross Junior Lifeguard program is offered at Ivywild Pool. This course is designed to give young people ages 11-14 an early start to becoming lifeguards. Course activities include fitness training, learning how to prevent accidents, leadership, professionalism and responsiveness. Participants will receive activity books and do volunteer work with the lifeguards to learn how the pools operate on a day-to-day basis.
