Inclusive Playground Communication Board

The new sign encourages inclusive play for all members of our community and is an effective way to allow children of all abilities to communicate and promote public awareness of Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC).

Communication boards at playgrounds have become increasingly popular in recent years. Many of the symbols and images are standardized across the country for ease of use and understanding, while other graphics on the board are personalized and tailored to the specific playground equipment and park site where the board is located.

Boise’s first playground communication board includes custom graphics for Bowden Park, as well as braille and both English and Spanish.

Playground construction wrapped up in June 2022 and rubber bonded surfacing has been installed.

The new playground at Bowden Park was built with accessibility in mind.

Amenities woven into the playground design provide opportunities for individuals utilizing mobility devices and include the ability to enter or interact with other children as they play and explore around them. Overall, the playground features are designed to appeal to older children ages 5 to 12 age group.

In addition, a special bonded rubber fall material will be installed underneath the playground – the surface is easy to navigate for people who use assistive devices and provides a soft surface for all playground users.

    • Avalanche Inclusive Slide
      • This is the first and only accessible slide of its kind. The lower transfer point allows children to access the slide from ground level. From there, they can pull themselves up by gripping the side rail. Once they’ve reached the desired height, gravity whisks them down the slide.
    • Electronic Piano Panel
      • Sensory play is crucial to every child’s development and growth. This product provides the following sensory play experience, auditory. Hearing is the ability to perceive sound by detecting vibrations and changes in the pressure in the ear.
    • Ten Spin
      • Built to accommodate up to 10 kids at once, this popular, freestanding product allows children of all abilities to join in the fun by either sitting, kneeling, or standing. The Ten Spin is an inclusive freestanding product that allows children of all abilities to play together, while providing an essential sensory experience that supports child development.
