Camel's Back Trail Improvement Project

Camel's Back Trail Work

The Ridge to Rivers team is working to improve the trail tread along a section of trail located adjacent to the main Camel’s Back chute. This section of Camel’s Back trail is very rocky and steep, leading hikers to widen the trail as they try to find the easiest route.

Crews are adding approximately 38 wooden steps to improve the quality of the trail, and to replace the adjacent rope fence with post and rail fencing. Upon completion the fenced area will be planted with seed and seedlings. This work is taking longer than initially anticipated (18 days) due to weather conditions. Completion is now expected in March 2026, weather permitting.

The section of trail will be temporarily closed while our team works in the area.

We appreciate your patience and understanding as the team works to efficiently complete these trail improvements!

FAQ

Approximately 38 wooden steps are being added to secure this section due to erosion. These steps will improve the quality of the trail, making its steep, rocky terrain more approachable for users. Additionally, it will prevent further erosion and damage of this popular recreational route in the heart of Boise

Warm weather and dry conditions are ideal for this kind of trail work. The project is taking place in the winter because of the decreased foothill traffic the season provides, and the current stretch of above normal temperatures make it an ideal time to complete this work.

Due to wet weather, the project is taking longer than anticipated (18 days). It is now expected to wrap up in March 2026. Unforeseen conditions could change this projected timeframe. Ridge to Rivers will share additional updates as needed.

Yes. Please avoid this section of trail until the project is complete for your safety and the safety of our team. Signs are posted to alert and re-route hikers as needed.
