Inclusive Playground Communication Board located at Fairview Park

Inclusive Playground Communication Board

The new sign encourages inclusive play for all members of our community and is an effective way to allow children of all abilities to communicate and promote public awareness of Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC)

Fairview Park includes Boise’s first dual-sided AAC board, allowing children across both the toddler and youth play areas to access communication tools.

Communication boards at playgrounds have become increasingly popular in recent years. Many of the symbols and images are standardized across the country for ease of use and understanding, while other graphics on the board are personalized and tailored to the specific playground equipment and park site where the board is located.

The communication board includes custom graphics for Fairview Park, as well as braille and both English and Spanish.

The new playground at Fairview Park was built with accessibility in mind.

Amenities woven into the playground design provide opportunities for individuals utilizing mobility devices and include the ability to enter or interact with other children as they play and explore around them. Overall, the playground features are designed to appeal to older children ages 5 to 12 age group.

In addition, a special bonded rubber fall material has been installed underneath the playground – the surface is easy to navigate for people who use assistive devices and provides a soft surface for all playground users.
