September 2020 Pilot Wave Schedule

pilot wave schedule

Boise Parks and Recreation has received requests from the surf community in recent weeks to adjust the time allotment at the Phase 1 wave of the Boise Whitewater Park. These changes have been requested due to a visible increase in the number of users who are attending on “green wave” days. The current summer wave schedule allots 50 percent of time to a green wave each week, and 50 percent of time to a kayak wave/hole. The wave technician makes these changes at noon each day so that staff is available to assist users and be available for any questions.

The Parks and Recreation team has been gathering data to better understand use patterns at the facility. Our team used the webcams at the park to take a photo every hour of every day over a several week period, and then compiled counts by hour based on this tracking mechanism. Data was compiled based on daily use from 6 a.m. to 9 p.m., Tuesday August 4 through Thursday, August 20, 2020. This effort shows that the green wave configuration is being used at a much higher rate than the kayak wave/hole configuration. Our department is proposing to begin a pilot adjustment to the wave schedule beginning on Monday, September 14.

In order to better accommodate the higher-used wave configuration, Boise Parks and Recreation is proposing to eliminate the currently scheduled Monday wave adjustment where every other Monday, surf and kayak features rotate. In this pilot schedule, Mondays are proposed to be scheduled as green wave days going forward. This schedule will run through September as a pilot to see how it impacts park use. Our team will continue to monitor use of the features during this pilot period to understand the impact it has on users and will potentially adjust the schedule moving forward. If you have any questions or would like more information related to this proposal, please email us at BPR@cityofboise.org – Again, this new pilot schedule is proposed to take effect Monday, September 14. Thank you for your continued support of the Boise Whitewater Park.
