Hefty ReNew Orange Bag Program Update

Hefty has made the decision to phase out the Hefty ReNew Orange Bag program nationwide. The City of Boise is one of many communities that participate in the voluntary program, which provides residents with an additional option to divert hard-to-recycle plastics from the landfill. The program is ending due to a limited number of options available to recycle the collected materials at scale.

According to Hefty, the Hefty ReNew Orange Bags will be available for purchase from participating local retailers through the end of 2026, while supplies last. The bags can continue to be recycled until June 30, 2027. After that date, Hefty ReNew Orange Bags will no longer be accepted for recycling and the plastic items previously collected should be placed in the trash. After June 30, 2027, residents with unused orange bags can contact Hefty for return and refund instructions.

The City of Boise encourages everyone to continue reducing waste by choosing products with less plastic packaging, opting for reuseable alternatives and recycling when able. As a reminder, plastic #1 and #2 bottles, jars and jugs and plastic #5 food tubs can be recycled.

The Hefty® ReNew™ orange bag program gives participating residents a way to collect plastics that are not accepted as loose items in the curbside recycle cart. This voluntary program gives residents the opportunity to divert a variety of plastics from the landfill to be converted into valued resources.

How Does it Work?

  1. Purchase Hefty® ReNew™ orange bags.
  2. Collect hard-to-recycle plastics in the bag.
  3. Place full, tied bags into your blue recycle cart.
  4. The recycling truck collects the bags and delivers them to a local recycling facility as a part of normal service.
  5. The collected plastics can become an energy resource, feedstock for fuels or new products, or ground into smaller pieces to make new plastic building products and plastic lumber.
