October 21, 2025

BOISE – Mayor Lauren McLean has selected Aaron Hummel to lead the city’s Fire Department as Fire Chief. Hummel is well known to the department, as he has worked in various roles with Boise Fire since 1995.

“From his first day putting on his uniform, Aaron has served our residents as part of Boise’s Fire Department,” said Mayor Lauren McLean. “For three decades he has shown exemplary service and dedication to our community and has demonstrated, time and again, his passion for his profession. I look forward to his leadership.”

Chief Hummel currently oversees the department’s battalion chiefs, spending the last two decades in operations leadership as a Captain and Battalion Chief. During his tenure with Boise Fire, Hummel has contributed to initiatives that span emergency response, EMS coordination, inter-agency collaboration, and regional operations. Hummel currently serves as an Executive Board Member of Southwest Idaho Fire Chiefs and as Chairman of Emergency Service Users Group for Ada County Dispatch. He is also a member of the International Association of Fire Chiefs, Idaho Fire Chiefs Association, and Treasure Valley Command officers.

“Over the years, I’ve had the privilege to serve in nearly every role within the Boise Fire Department, from firefighter to Division Chief,” said Chief Hummel. “It’s an incredible honor to continue serving the people of Boise as Fire Chief. I’m proud to lead such a dedicated team as we uphold our tradition of excellence and continue growing with this amazing community.”

Chief Hummel is a U.S. Navy veteran and life-long Boisean. He graduated from the U.S. National Fire Academy’s Executive Fire Officer program and is certified as a Chief Fire Officer through the Center for Public Safety Excellence. Hummel enjoys mountain biking and running in Boise’s Ridge to Rivers trail system as well as backpacking in Idaho’s beautiful backcountry. He plays hockey with Boise Fire’s traveling hockey team and is an avid Idaho Steelheads fan.

Hummel is expected to be confirmed by City Council and sworn in by Mayor McLean during their regularly scheduled meeting on Tuesday, November 18. Chief Hummel will take over for current Chief Mark Niemeyer who is set to retire.  All City Council meetings are open to the public and livestreamed on the city’s YouTube channel.
