BOISE FIRE CHIEF SHARES VIDEO HIGHLIGHTING GROWING WILDFIRE AND INSURANCE CHALLENGES
Boise Fire Chief Aaron Hummel is encouraging community leaders, policymakers, and public safety stakeholders to engage in a broader conversation about the growing challenges posed by wildfire risk and its downstream impacts on communities across the West.
Chief Hummel has begun sharing a brief five-minute video with local and state stakeholders that outlines what he believes to be one of the most significant emerging threats facing communities in the 21st century: the increasing intersection between wildfire risk, community resilience, and the availability and affordability of property insurance coverage.
“As wildfire behavior becomes more complex and destructive, communities are beginning to experience impacts that extend far beyond emergency response,” said Chief Hummel. “This is not only a fire service issue, but also a public safety, economic, and community resilience issue that deserves thoughtful discussion and proactive planning.”
The video references growing concerns across western states about the impact of wildfire risk on insurance markets and long-term community sustainability. It also highlights ongoing conversations among fire service organizations and stakeholders regarding the use of advanced risk modeling, analytics, and targeted mitigation investments to help communities better understand and reduce wildfire exposure.
Chief Hummel noted that addressing these challenges will require collaboration among local governments, fire agencies, policymakers, insurers, and community partners.
