Statement on the Election from Mayor Lauren McLean

November 7, 2020

This morning, Joe Biden was announced as President elect and Kamala Harris Vice President-Elect. I congratulate them both and this history making ticket.

While I supported the President-Elect, I know that there are many in our region – our friends, neighbors, maybe even family – who might have hoped for another outcome. I remain committed to working with each and every Boisean – no matter your politics – to reunite and move our community forward. Because at the end of the day, I know that our passion in politics is connected to our passion for our community, state, and country.

I’d like to say thank you for your patience over the last few days as we waited for results of the presidential election. Over the days and weeks to come, we may see recounts and legal challenges, but the results of the election are now clear.

And I want to thank Boise residents who helped support our elections process. You volunteered at the polls; volunteered for campaigns and worked to ensure that we had plans in place to protect voters’ right to vote. This is when we’re at our best: when we’re building bridges and supporting members of our community.

Americans and Boiseans are passionate people. We've witnessed that as people protested, knocked on doors, and put their time and effort into campaigns this year. Sometimes it got heated. Sometimes it went too far. But I know, for the most part, that was because Boiseans and Americans were fighting for what they thought was best for all of us. I know those passions don’t dissipate overnight, nor should they. But we must come back together.

And in coming back together, we must address our divisions, meet needs and expectations, return to the norms of our nation, together. We are at our best when we are united, focused on community and ensuring a vibrant future for the people and place that we love.

And when together, we will tackle the great challenges ahead: from addressing COVID-19 to rebuilding our economy; addressing the risks of climate change to securing affordable housing and well-paying jobs. Local solutions to these challenges will pave the way for a resilient future while doing all we can to protect what we love about our community as we grow. Together, as Democrats and Republicans – but really Boiseans – we can and will do this. And it’s truly an honor to work alongside you to move our community forward.
