City of Boise Seeks Feedback on Disability Community Accessibility Plan

October 17, 2022

The City of Boise is committed to creating a city for everyone, which means that all people, including those with disabilities have equal opportunity and meaningful access to resources, programs and services offered by the city.

The city embarked on creating its Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) Self-Evaluation and Transition Plan to move us beyond compliance standards. Through an assessment of 28 city facilities, including Zoo Boise, our libraries, and the Boise Airport, a plan has been drafted to address all physical barriers by the end of 2028. These barriers include bathroom issues like insufficient turning space for wheelchairs, parking and pedestrian pathway errors, missing braille signage, and more. A programmatic review was also completed to improve effective communication, reasonable accommodations, special events accessibility, among other updates.

The city partnered with its Cross Disability Advisory Taskforce to hear directly from people with lived experience about how we prioritize these updates to ensure a meaningful approach for the community. The plan is now in its final phase, welcoming public comment through October 31, 2022.

“Boise offers so much to our residents – from our neighborhood libraries to our expansive trail system, to a vibrant downtown. Ensuring all residents, including those with disabilities, have equitable access to enjoy each is key to creating a city for everyone,” said Mayor McLean. “I am grateful to the commitment and dedication of our residents who serve on the Cross Disability Advisory Taskforce. They worked alongside our staff to identify barriers we need to remove to provide access to all Boiseans.”
