City Outlines Steps to Fill Council Vacancies

January 18, 2023

Following the determination that former city council member, Lisa Sánchez inadvertently vacated her District 3 council seat, and in anticipation of council member Elaine Clegg’s at-large vacancy, Mayor Lauren McLean is preparing to make appointments to fill the vacancies. Candidates appointed to the two positions will fill out the remainder of the terms, both of which will be up for election later this year.

“We knew we would be looking for a candidate to appoint to the at-large seat now held by Elaine Clegg,” said Mayor McLean. “Unexpectedly, and unfortunately, we are now seeking candidates for both the upcoming at-large vacancy and the current vacancy in District 3. I encourage anyone with a passion for Boise, a strong record of civic engagement, and a willingness to serve to apply. It is important to me that the process is fair, and that we make good by the voters of District 3 in this unexpected vacancy, so I'll take very seriously the will of the voters who elected Lisa if she wishes to be considered for appointment.”

The application process will open January 24, 2023 and close on February 14, 2023 at 5 p.m. Interested candidates must submit an official application during that time to be considered for one of the vacancies. Candidates seeking an appointment to District 3 must be qualified electors in the district; candidates seeking an appointment to the at-large seat must be qualified electors in city limits.
