Zoo Boise Welcomes Female Amur Tiger

Zoo Boise, a division of Boise Parks and Recreation, is happy to announce the arrival of its newest member. Diana, a seven-year-old Amur tiger, arrived in Boise on Sunday and is adjusting well to her new home.

Diana comes to Zoo Boise from Bramble Park Zoo in Watertown, South Dakota. Amur tigers are endangered – it is estimated that there are only about 540 left in the wild.

“Our tiger exhibit has always been a favorite for Zoo Boise visitors,” said Boise Parks and Recreation Director Doug Holloway. “We are so excited to introduce a new generation to this incredible animal.”

The Association of Zoos & Aquariums’ (AZA) Tiger Species Survival Plan recommended that Diana come to the zoo on a breeding hold, although there are no immediate plans for that process to begin.

“This is a special time for Zoo Boise and we are pleased to welcome Diana to our animal family,” said Gene Peacock, Zoo Boise director. “She will help us continue our mission to educate the public about endangered species and the AZA’s efforts to protect them.”

Two drivers trained in animal care helped transport the tiger to Zoo Boise in a specialized truck. She was unloaded and introduced to her exhibit this past weekend and Zoo Boise staff are helping to get her settled.

Zoo Boise staff anticipate that Diana will be out on exhibit starting today, May 2. Please note that she may not always be visible to the public as she explores her surroundings and continues training with zookeepers.
