City leaders and project partners are excited to unveil major improvements at Veterans Memorial Park, bringing new opportunities for recreation, play and community connection to one of the city’s most beloved parks. Located at the corner of State Street and Veterans Memorial Parkway, the new 18-hole disc golf course and nature playground at the park site are open for use and already proving popular!
City leaders, project partners and neighbors initially gathered in 2025 to mark the beginning of construction with a golden shovel ceremony. Today, the community came together again to celebrate the transformation of the park into a more dynamic and welcoming space designed to serve visitors of all ages.
“Veteran's Memorial Park is a well-loved destination along the Boise River Greenbelt for kids and families to wander the memorials, enjoy the playground and connect with neighbors while being surrounded by nature,” said Boise Mayor Lauren McLean. “These improvements provide free outdoor and recreational opportunities for over 4,000 nearby residents of all ages who live within a 10-minute walk of the park and will serve Boiseans for generations to come.”
Boise Parks and Recreation worked closely with community members to develop an updated park master plan that reflects how residents use and value the park space. A year-long community-led engagement process in partnership with park stakeholders including the State of Idaho Department of Parks and Recreation, nearby neighborhood associations and veteran support groups directly shaped the new features, ensuring they meet the needs of both current and future park users.
Among the highlights is a new 18-hole disc golf course, thoughtfully designed in collaboration with disc golf players, risk and safety professionals, neighborhood associations and other stakeholders. Safety and accessibility were prioritized throughout the design process to ensure a positive experience for all visitors.
The park also features an innovative nature playground that encourages imaginative and cooperative play. New elements include a dry stream bed with a water pump, a sand play area, natural log and rock play features, sunflower chalk boards, log climbers, a drinking fountain, and a multi-user interactive swing. These additions complement the existing, traditional playground on-site and expand opportunities for children and teens to explore and engage with the outdoors.
Additional improvements include enhanced safety and security infrastructure, reflecting community feedback and the city’s commitment to maintaining a welcoming and secure environment at Veterans Memorial Park. The approximately $660,000 investment was funded through impact fees generated by Boise’s continued growth and development.
“Veterans Memorial Park now offers even more ways for people to gather, play and enjoy the outdoors,” said Boise Parks and Recreation Director Sara Arkle. “We’re excited to see the community make the most of these new features and continue creating memories in this special place.”
Veterans Memorial Park was acquired by Boise Parks and Recreation in 1997 through a lease agreement between the City of Boise and the State of Idaho. To learn more about Veterans Memorial Park and the important memorials located there, please visit our website.
