Summer is known as the 100 deadliest days and to reduce driving-related injuries and deaths, the Boise Police Department joined the Idaho Office of Highway Safety, and AAA Idaho to offer driving safety tips in seven languages.
“Driving and traffic related concerns are the top issue we hear about from our community, including those who first language is not English,” said Boise Police Cpl. Kyle Wills. “We are committed to helping all those who call Boise home feel safe on the roads and understand what it takes to be a safe and responsible driver.”
During Wednesday’s event, officers and other experts were at the English Language Center working with interpreters to answer questions and offer hands on demonstrations.
"Research shows that the vast majority of drivers want to do the right thing, but sometimes a lack of information can produce a safety disconnect," says AAA Idaho public affairs director Matthew Conde. "Events like these provide an important opportunity to raise awareness. Individuals making good choices are all it takes to save a life."
Materials for the event were translated into Spanish, French, Swahili, Arabic, Ukrainian, Farsi/Dari and Kinyarwanda. Demonstrations focused on the dangers of drinking and driving, aggressive driving, and hot cars. Experts were also available to check car batteries, tire pressure and answer questions about driving laws and penalties.
