Motorcycle Safety and Awareness

April 28, 2025

Traffic safety is a top concern for our community. After a recent rise in motorcycle crashes, the Boise Police Department is reminding all road users about the importance of safe riding and driving practices.

“Motorcycle-related crashes, many of which are preventable, continue to be a major concern for our community,” said Boise Police Cpl. Kyle Wills. “With the warmer weather and increased riding season upon us, it’s crucial that riders, drivers, and the public pay close attention to safety.”

Following a rise in motorcycle fatalities last year, Boise Police are also seeing a rise in overall motorcycle crashes so far this year.

“We’re encouraging all riders to take simple steps that can dramatically reduce the risk of a crash. These include wearing proper protective gear, staying visible, and being cautious when making left-hand turns. Additionally, we want to remind drivers of cars and trucks to be mindful of motorcyclists and share the road safely,” said Wills

Traffic Safety

The Boise Police Department is committed to increasing traffic enforcement for all vehicle types across the city.  Officers are focusing on risky driving behaviors that often lead to accidents, such as speeding, failure to yield, and reckless driving. The department encourages everyone to remain alert and practice safe driving habits year-round.

Motorcycle Safety Tips

  • Always wear a DOT-approved helmet and full protective gear.
  • Don’t race or weave through traffic—public roads are not racetracks.
  • Be visible. Use lights and wear high-visibility clothing.
  • Watch left turns. Recent crashes have occurred when a motorcycle or driver turns left across two lanes of traffic without ensuring the second lane is clear.
  • Don’t ride impaired by drugs, alcohol, or fatigue.
  • Stay trained. Take refresher courses even if you’ve been riding for years.

Safety Tips for Car and Truck Drivers

  • Look Twice, Save a Life. Always check twice for motorcyclists before changing lanes, turning, or pulling out at intersections.
  • Give motorcyclists plenty of space. Maintain a safe following distance and pass at a safe distance.
  • Use your turn signals. Indicating your lane changes clearly can help motorcyclists predict your actions and stay safe.
  • Stay alert. Watch for riders, especially in poor weather conditions or at night when visibility is reduced.
