Fugitive to Idaho arrested on W. Franklin Rd

February 3, 2025

Arrested: Devin James Smith, 36

Charges: Fugitive to Idaho (F),  Resisting and Obstructing (m)

This morning, February 3, 2025, Boise Police officers took a suspect into custody who was wanted out of Thurston County, Washington.  Boise Police were first notified to be on the lookout for the suspect last night.  The suspect, Devin Smith, was said to be armed and dangerous and was wanted on warrants for rape of a child, domestic violence, and assault, and was under investigation for additional violent crimes including kidnapping and false imprisonment.

Just before 8:00 am today Boise Police received information that Smith and his vehicle may be in Boise.  Based on the information, officers were able to locate his truck in a parking lot on the 5200 block of W. Franklin Road.  Officers confirmed the suspect was in a local business and secured the scene so they could safely take him into custody.

Just after 9:30 am the suspect exited the store and as officers approached him, he attempted to injure his own neck with a knife. For the safety of the suspect and the officers, officers deployed a 40mm less lethal round and the suspect attempted to flee on foot.  A Boise Police K9 was deployed, and an Ada County Sheriff’s deputy deployed a taser.  Officers and the deputy were able to stop the suspect from further injuring himself and safely take him into custody.

“Knowing the suspect had a history of violence, officers were careful to create a plan that ensured the safety of the community and the customers in the store by stopping the suspect from fleeing back into the building or to his nearby vehicle,” said Captain Jim Quackenbush. “This is an excellent example of strong communication between our officers to both isolate a dangerous individual and appropriately deploy less-lethal tools to resolve a situation that could have ended much differently.”

The suspect was taken to a local hospital for treatment of self-inflicted injuries to his neck.  He will be booked into the Ada County Jail upon his release from the hospital and extradition to Washington will be handled by the courts.
