Fall & Winter Parking Reminder: Keeping Our Streets Clear and Safe

November 6, 2025

As the weather cools and summer activities wind down, the Boise Police Department and the City of Boise want to remind residents about the importance of keeping vehicles properly parked and maintained throughout the fall and winter months.

Each year, we see vehicles left on city streets, often RVs, trailers, or other recreational vehicles used during the summer. While it may be tempting to leave them parked until next season, long-term storage on public streets can lead to safety hazards, limited visibility, and reduced parking availability for neighbors.

City and State Codes

Boise City Code 6-10A-11 – Extended Parking
No person shall park a vehicle upon any street, alley, or public property for more than 72 hours unless specifically allowed by permit. Moving a vehicle less than 600 feet within 24 hours does not reset the clock — it’s still considered continuous parking.

Idaho Code 49-1806 – Abandoned Vehicles
A vehicle left unattended on public property for over 24 hours, or on private property without the owner’s consent, may be considered abandoned and subject to removal or impoundment. On private property, vehicles can also be towed or booted if the property is properly signed in compliance with state law.

Tips to Help Stay in Compliance and Avoid Citations or Towing

  • Move your vehicle every 72 hours to avoid being marked as abandoned.  Vehicles that are not being driven frequently are best kept off the street.
  • Store RVs, trailers, and inoperable vehicles on private property or at an approved storage facility, not on public streets.
  • Check on parked vehicles regularly, especially after storms or long trips, to ensure they remain operable.
  • Going out of town? Ask a neighbor or friend to move your vehicle periodically, or if you have off-street parking, ensure it is parked off the street.
  • Keep your vehicle registration and contact information current in case city staff or officers need to contact you.

Reporting an Abandoned or Problem Vehicle

If you see a vehicle that appears abandoned or hasn’t moved in several days, you can report it in one of the following ways:

Boise Police Vehicle Impound Unit
Handles reports of abandoned, junk, or inoperable vehicles within Boise city limits.

City of Boise Parking Services

Handles metered parking and other parking across the city.

Non-Emergency Dispatch (Ada County)
When you need to report an immediate issue:

  • Phone: (208) 377-6790

Your reports help ensure that city streets remain safe, accessible, and welcoming for everyone. By staying informed and proactive, we can keep Boise’s neighborhoods looking their best throughout the fall and winter seasons.
