Parks and Open Space Protections

Boiseans value the many benefits that come from access to the city’s beautiful parks and open space reserves. Since 2021, the Parks and Recreation Department has been working with Mayor Lauren McLean and city leadership to complete an exhaustive review of documents related to the city's 103 park sites in Boise city limits (both developed and undeveloped), 14 open space reserves and the Boise River Greenbelt.

While many properties already had lasting protections written into existing agreements like deeds, donation agreements, construction, and purchase agreements, 51 parks and open space reserves were identified to benefit from additional protections.

Starting November 15, 2022, individual resolutions adding deed restrictions to park and open spaces properties were presented in groups to Mayor McLean and Boise City Council members. The final group of park and open space reserve protections were adopted on January 10, 2023. All eligible parks and open space reserves within city limits now have important lasting protections. Any future property added to the city’s park and open space inventory, including park property annexed into the city, will be afforded the same lasting protections. This includes sites like the Shamrock St. park land purchase and the linear park + pathway on West Goddard Road.
