Residential Recycling Guidelines

Set-Out Guidelines

  • Set carts out by 6:00 a.m. and remove within 24 hours
  • Place carts at the curb or alley with the handle facing your home, and don’t block sidewalks
  • Keep carts at least three feet away from other objects (carts, mailboxes, fire hydrants, low hanging trees or shrubs, parked cars, etc.)
  • Do not place hot ashes in or on carts

Extra Recycling

  • Occasional extra recycling can be placed in a cardboard box, no larger than 2’ x 2’ or in a sturdy container such as a tall 20-32-gallon kitchen trash can. All overflow containers must be labeled “RECYCLING” and cardboard must be flattened.
  • If you don’t have room in your cart for all your recycling, consider adding a second recycling cart for less than three dollars per month.
  • Refer to our Drop-Off Map for the drop-off locations.

If you have had a missed trash, recycle or compost cart pick-up, please email our service provider Republic Services or call at (208) 345-1266.

Recycling FAQs

What types of plastic are recyclable?

Boise accepts #1 and #2 bottles, jars, and jugs, along with #5 food tubs. Additional plastics (#4–7) can be recycled using Hefty ReNew Orange Bags.

Why is the Hefty ReNew Orange Bag program coming to an end?

Hefty made the decision to end the program in June 2027. Read more here.

What do the plastic numbers mean?

The number inside the triangle shows the type of plastic the item is made from, which helps determine how (or if) it can be recycled.

Why can’t other items be recycled here in Boise?

  • Accepted materials are based on what local recycling centers can safely sort and send to end markets that can turn the material into new products. So, items without reliable recycling end markets aren’t accepted.

How clean does my recycling need to be?

Items should be mostly clean and dry when being recycled. Just give them a quick rinse or wipe, then place them loose in your recycling.

Do I need to remove caps, lids and labels?

No, all of these can be recycled by simply placing caps and lids back on after rinsing and drying the items. Labels can remain on containers.

What happens to my recycling?

Your recycling is taken to a local recycling center where it’s sorted, bundled, and sent to recycling end markets to be made into new products.
