Rodent Prevention

Simple steps to help keep pests out of our neighborhoods.

The Treasure Valley has experienced a noticeable increase in rat activity over the past few years. Norway rats and roof rats are the most prominent types in the area.

Currently, no single agency is responsible for managing rat populations in the area, and the City of Boise does not offer a program for pest control or extermination. However, we can work together to reduce the risk and keep our neighborhoods safe and healthy.

Boiseans are encouraged to take simple, proactive steps around their homes. A few small changes can make a big difference.

Prevent Rat Infestations

  • Rats can enter your home through small gaps to search for food and nesting spaces. If you spot a rat or suspect an infestation in your area or home, always wear a mask and gloves when handling the situation or call a licensed exterminator.
  • Seal entry points: Block cracks and gaps around doors, windows, and utility lines using materials like metal mesh, steel wool or caulk. Ensure vents to attics and crawl spaces are sealed. Close pet doors at night and when not needed.
  • Reduce moisture: Fix leaky pipes and other sources of standing water in and around your home.
  • Manage landscaping: Trim back trees and shrubs that provide cover and pathways for rodents to get up into your homes roof or crawlspace. Store firewood and debris piles away from your home's foundation.

Eliminate Food Sources

  • Store all food securely in airtight containers, clean up crumbs and spills.
  • Keep trash, recycling, and compost carts completely closed and store indoors when possible. Bag trash (not recycling or compost) and tie the bag tightly.
  • For business waste, bag all trash (don’t bag recycling), keep area around dumpsters clean, close lids at all times, keep grease traps and containers clean and maintained.
  • Consider not using birdseed or squirrel food. Bring all pet food and birdseed indoors and keep sealed in hard sided containers.
  • Clean up fallen fruit and nuts from trees. Pick vegetables and don’t allow them to rot outside. Consider using metal netting around your garden.
