The City of Boise Seeks Applicants for Public Works Commission

October 28, 2020

The City of Boise is seeking one member and one student member to join the Public Works Commission. They will represent, as much as possible, the diverse spectrum of people who enjoy all that Boise has to offer. Geographic diversity, as well as expertise and experience in areas relevant to the Commission’s purpose, will be considered in the appointment process.

The Public Works department has a wide range of responsibilities, including management of the City’s water renewal facilities, collection system, and biosolids application site; the trash, recycling, composting, and household hazardous waste programs; the geothermal heating district downtown and irrigation, supporting several dispersed irrigation systems; and climate action, air quality, stormwater, groundwater, floodplain, and project management areas. Public Works also manages the City streetlight and gulch drainage facilities and provides maintenance services for the City Hall complexes and numerous other City buildings.

Public Works Commission members, appointed by Mayor Lauren McLean and affirmed by the Boise City Council, will provide recommendations on policies and provide direction to the Public Works department. They will provide guidance and feedback across the entire breadth of these duties, including engineering, water renewal operations, environmental planning services, facilities management, and utility administration.

Requirements

Applicants must be residents of the City of Boise, have the ability to meet at least monthly (typically monthly on Wednesday at 4 p.m., with an additional quarterly meeting), and serve a four-year term. They must be, at the time of their appointment and throughout the tenure of their membership, residents of the City; provided, that one member of the Commission may be a resident of Ada County who resides within Boise City/Ada County area of impact. The City residency requirement may be waived for an Ada County resident owning or operating a business located within the City, which receives City sewer and/or trash.

One student member, who also must be a City of Boise resident, will serve a one-year term. The committee will be chaired by the sitting Chair of the Public Works Commission. At the time of their first appointment, the student member must be a high school college undergraduate or graduate student. They shall be appointed to a term of up to one year and may be reappointed for up to three (3) additional one-year terms.

Residents with backgrounds or experience in finance, education, energy, and small business and the ability to advise on policy, policy exceptions, and make budget recommendations, are encouraged to apply for the appointment.

The City of Boise is committed to transparency. The documentation provided by an applicant will be subject to public records requests.

The deadline for applying is November 13, 2020. Residents can apply by sending a cover letter and resume to commissionapplications@cityofboise.org.
