UPDATE: Suspect Identified in Officer-Involved Shooting in Meridian

NEWS RELEASE

Suspect: Jake Cottrell, 39, Boise

Charges:  Assault or battery upon certain personnel (F) – 2 counts, Grand theft (F), Robbery (F), Enhancement- Use of a deadly weapon in commission of a crime (F), Weapon -Unlawful possession by convicted felon (F), Eluding a police officer (F)

The suspect injured in an officer-involved shooting in Meridian on Thursday, June 9, 2022, remains in the hospital and in the custody of the Ada County Jail.  His name is Jake Cottrell and he is charged with the seven (7) felonies listed above.  Upon his release from the hospital, he will be booked into the Ada County Jail. We do not have an update on his condition to release at this time.

The Ada County Critical Incident Task Force (CITF) led by the Garden City Police Department is continuing to investigate.   The Boise Police Department officers who were involved are Corporal B. Orton with twenty-three (23) years of police experience, all with BPD; Sergeant K. Rush with seventeen (17) years of police experience, all with BPD; Officer C. Burch with almost four (4) years of police experience, all with BPD.

Update on Yesterday’s Officer Involved Shooting in Downtown Meridian

The Meridian officers involved in yesterday’s officer involved shooting in downtown Meridian include:

  • A twenty-six (26) year old male Meridian Police Patrol Officer with five and a half (5.5) years of police experience of which three (3) years have been with the Meridian Police Department.
  • A forty-one (41) year old male Meridian Patrol Sergeant with twenty-one total years of law enforcement experience of which seventeen (17) years have been with the Meridian Police Department.

The Boise Police Department officers involved in yesterday’s officer involved shooting in downtown Meridian include:

  • A Boise Police Corporal with twenty-three (23) years of police experience all with BPD.
  • A Boise Police Sergeant with seventeen (17) years of police experience all with BPD.
  • A Boise Police Officer with almost four (4) years of police experience all with BPD.

The Meridian and Boise Police Departments will release the names of officers at a later date.  The Meridian Police Department does not release names of officers involved in critical incidents until the Critical Incident Task Force Investigation is complete.

Officer Involved Shooting Occurs in Downtown Meridian

The Ada County Critical Incident Taskforce is investigating an officer involved shooting that occurred in downtown Meridian today, June 9, 2022. As this is an active investigation, all information being provided is subject to change.

At 1:23 pm Boise Police were notified of a shooting involving the Idaho Department of Corrections on the 9800 block of W. Shields Avenue in Boise.  The white male suspect fled the scene in a stolen vehicle. As officers began to search the area, they were notified of a reported carjacking in Eagle.  The suspect and the stolen pickup truck was quickly located driving southbound on Eagle Road and a pursuit ensued. The pursuit ended near W. Broadway Ave and NW 1st Street in Meridian when a Boise Police officer successfully performed a pursuit intervention technique (PIT) maneuver to bring the vehicle to a stop.

The suspect and officers exchanged gun fire. Three (3) officers from Boise Police Department and two (2) officers from Meridian Police Department fired their weapons. The suspect was hit and officers began performing life saving measures. He was taken to a local hospital to receive treatment and his condition is unknown. No officers or civilians were injured.

The Ada County Critical Incident Task Force (CITF) led by the Garden City Police Department has been activated to investigate the shooting.  Officers on body video will be reviewed as part of the investigation. The information in this news release is considered preliminary pending the results of the CITF investigation.
