Crime Prevention tips of the week 4/2/21

April 2, 2021

school bus safety

Back to School Safety:

With additional schools offering in-person learning, we want to remind drivers to drive safely in school zones.

  • School Zone Speed Limit: The speed limit in school zones is 20 mph. School zones in Boise City are marked with flashing yellow lights when the slower speed limit is in effect. The fine for speeding in a Boise City School Zone is $156.50.
  • Crosswalks: Please be on the lookout for children crossing the street in both marked and unmarked crosswalks. Failing to yield to a pedestrian before crossing a crosswalk carries a $75 fine.

Lock it

Trailhead Theft:

Great weather means a greater chance you might head to one of Boise’s many trails, golf course and other outdoor recreational areas.  Whenever you park your car and head out on the trail be sure lock your car and remove any personal items.   In the last month BPD has responded to vehicle burglaries (see green triangles on map) in parking lots at trailheads and golf courses.

You can find more information on some recent vehicle burglaries and help us identify the suspects on BPD ID ME

Scam call

COVID-19 related scams

Another reminder to think twice about any unsolicited calls from someone claiming you owe them money.  Central District Health was recently made aware of a scammer calling local businesses and telling them they needed to pay a $3 COVID-19 fee to Central District Health. The scammer wanted the businesses’ banking information to process the payment.  Please be aware that scammers often use names of real government officials to scare or trick someone into making a quick decision.

If you get a call like this hang up, look up the organization’s phone number yourself and call them to confirm the request.  Do not use the number provided by the scammer or that the scammer called from.

As always...

  • Do not give credit, cash card or debit card numbers out over the phone.
  • Beware of threats of additional fees, fine, suspensions, or worse for not complying with their request
  • Ask for invoices or charges of work or services provided
  • Verify, verify, verify before acting
