How to Stay Safe on the Boise River

The Boise River offers great beauty and recreation opportunities for Boise residents and visitors. It is important to keep in mind these safety tips when you are out enjoying this Boise treasure.

  1. Never float the river alone.
  2. Be considerate and caring to the people that care about you. Let someone know where you are going, when you plan to return, and who to call if you haven't returned by the scheduled time.
  3. Be sure your knowledge, skills, and abilities are equal to the river and the conditions.
  4. Wear a properly fitted Personal Flotation Device (PFD) at all times when you are in or near the river.
  5. Helmets should be worn by kayakers and canoeists at all times.
  6. Wear protective footwear and proper clothing to lower chances of possible injury.
  7. Know about the dangers of hypothermia and how to deal with it.
  8. Know early signs and symptoms of heat exhaustion and dehydration in hot weather.
  9. Know your limitation and capabilities of swiftwater rescue and self rescue on "white water" rivers. Know when and how to swim for an eddy.
  10. Keep a first aid kit on hand and know how to use it.
  11. Know how to apply first aid and CPR.
  12. Be aware of new obstacles following spring floods.
