Cassia-Garden Bike/Ped Connection

Background

The City of Boise is planning a multi-use pathway connection between the ACHD Cassia Street Bikeway and the future Garden Street Bikeway.

Elements of this Cassia-Garden Connection include:

• A bicycle and pedestrian bridge over the Ridenbaugh Canal
• An ADA-compliant, paved multi-use pathway that connects Albion and Garden streets to Cassia Park
• Improvements to the Electric Light Switch Lateral (a canal extension of the Ridenbaugh Canal) including placing the lateral/canal extension in underground piping and paving the future pathway

The ACHD Cassia Street Bikeway and Garden Street Bikeway are separate and independent projects. The Cassia-Garden Bike/Ped Connection is the City of Boise’s proposed project for this area.

Why is this project needed?

• A North-South connection along Garden Street helps connect the Central Bench to Downtown Boise and Boise River Greenbelt, increases accessibility to Cassia Park, nearby schools and helps improve transportation options for all ages.
• The project will connect and complete a network of low-stress bikeways along Garden Street, Cassia Street and Shoshone Street.
• Provides Safe Routes to School connections linking Bishop Kelly High, Borah High, Good Shepherd Lutheran School, Sacred Heart Elementary, Rose Hill Montessori, Monroe Elementary and South Junior High.

Project Status

The City of Boise has selected JUB Engineers to complete a design for this pathway connection, which is anticipated to include piping and covering the Electric Light Switch Lateral channel between Cassia Park and Albion Street. JUB's work will include required State and Federal review process, design and cost estimates. With this work, the City of Boise will have a better understanding of the budget required and timeline for completing the multi-use pathway.
