Accepted Items
- Corrugated cardboard: Must fit completely inside the recycling cart. Flatten, if necessary.
- Paper: Newspapers, magazines, catalogs and paperboard (e.g. tissue and cereal boxes) and office paper (e.g. envelopes, copy paper, post it notes, scrap paper).
- Aluminum & steel (tin): Soft drink cans, soup cans, pie pans, foil, and empty aerosol cans (no pesticide containers).
- Plastics: Bottles, jugs and jars labeled #1 and #2 and Plastic food tubs labeled #5.

- Glass
- Foam materials (including packing peanuts, foam cups/plates)
- Hazardous waste or electronics
- Plastic Clamshell Containers (e.g. clear berry boxes and salad packages)
Guidelines
- Break down recycling to fit inside of your cart with the lid closed. Cardboard boxes should be flattened. Remember no plastic bags are permitted. If you don’t have room in your cart for all your recycling, consider getting a second recycling cart for less than a dollar per month.
- Occasional extra recycling can be placed in a cardboard box, no larger than 2’ x 2’ or in a sturdy container such as a tall 20-32-gallon kitchen trash can. All overflow containers must have “RECYCLING” labeled on it and all cardboard must be flattened.
- Set carts out by 6:00 a.m., remove from street within 24 hours.
- Place wheeled cart against the curb or along the alley with the handle pointing towards your residence; do not block the sidewalk with carts.
- Keep carts at least three feet away from other carts, mailboxes, fire hydrants, low hanging trees or shrubs, parked cars or utility poles so trucks can easily access the cart.
- Do not place hazardous waste in your trash or recycling cart. See Household Hazardous Waste for more information.
Hefty® ReNew™ orange bag
The Hefty® ReNew™ orange bag gives participating residents a way to collect plastics not accepted as loose items in the curbside recycle cart and divert them from the landfill to be converted into valued resources.
Glass
The City of Boise collects an average of 250 tons of glass per month. The collection of glass bottles and jars reduces carbon emissions and ensures a long-term, economical, and efficient program for city residents and businesses. The City partners with Environmental Abrasives to crush glass bottles and jars for reuse.
Curbside Glass Collection
We offer curbside glass collection for residents and businesses in addition to glass drop-off collection sites.
- Size: 65-gallon with reflective decals on the lid and around the body.
- Monthly fee: $8.19 per cart. If service is cancelled, a cart removal fee will be imposed.
- Maximum number of carts:
- Residents - 1
- Businesses - 2
- Schedule
Glass is collected every four weeks on your scheduled collection day. Click here to find out which day glass will be collected in your area.
Guidelines
- Set out the cart by 6:00 a.m. and place the cart at least three feet away from other carts.
- All glass must be placed inside the glass cart AND the lid must close. Do not overfill the cart. (Overfilled carts will spill glass into the street when the cart is emptied into the truck.)
- Only empty glass bottles and jars will be collected. Broken bottles and jars are okay. Discard lids, caps, and corks and lightly rinse the container. Mirrors, windows, dishes, fish tanks, light bulbs, or ceramics are not accepted.
- Do not place trash or non-glass recyclables in the "Glass Only" cart.
Drop Off Glass Collection
Drop off glass at any of the collection sites located throughout Boise for free. Sites are open 7 days a week.
Please note: Many sites are located in residential areas. We ask customers to use glass drop off sites no later than 10 p.m. to reduce late night noise disruption to surrounding neighborhoods.
Guidelines
- All types of glass bottles and jars (clear and colored) are accepted.
- Remove lids, caps, plastic bags, and cardboard boxes before depositing glass.
- Do not leave plastic or paper bags, cardboard boxes, or garbage at the drop-off sites.
- Mirrors, windows, dishes, fish tanks, fluorescent light bulbs, or ceramics are not accepted.
Commercial
Important
Recycling materials must be loose, except for Hefty ReNew™ recyclables, those should be bagged in an orange Hefty ReNew™. Plastic bags cause problems at the recycling facility by getting caught in the sorting lines.
